About Norwood Town Centre

Phone Code: 020

Postcode Area: SE19 County: Greater London

Norwood is the town centre in the South-East corner of Lambeth, adjacent to London Borough of Croydon and the south west of London Borough of Southwark.

Composed of Thurlow Park ward, Knights Hill ward and Gipsy Hill ward, it is part of the inner suburbs on the edge of outer London.

The town centre is located around the A215 Norwood Road/ Knights Hill and B232 Elder Road. It is bounded in the North by the southern edge of Brockwell Park, in the East by A2199 Croxted Road and in the South, A214 Crown Lane/ Central Hill.

In the west, it merges with Streatham. Norwood is Lambeth's smallest town centre geographically, with an area of around 450 hectares, approximately 15% of the Borough (2,723 hectares).

In comparison with the severely deprived wards in central Lambeth, Norwood is often perceived as a "leafy", affluent area. However, in common with many places in inner London, Norwood has a mix of neighbourhoods, with areas of affluence and deprivation in close proximity.

The "averaged out" nature of ward figures has meant Norwood’s areas of deprivation do not have a high profile. As a consequence, Norwood is sometimes perceived to have "missed out" on recent regeneration initiatives in Lambeth.

Norwood has many historic and appealing sites. The architectural landmarks and features include the St. Luke’s Church, West Norwood Cemetery (the finest necropolis in South London), South London Theatre, and the Nettlefold (a modern purpose built venue for the performing arts and cultural activities). Norwood Park provides an amazing view of central London.

Norwood Town Centre has a mix of businesses within its district shopping areas of West Norwood and Westow Hill, and the neighbourhood shopping areas of Rosendale Road and Gipsy Hill. The West Norwood Industrial Commercial Area is the largest such area in the Borough and has for many years been promoted specifically for industrial and business development.

It has a variety of land uses with a predominance of industry. Norwood also has good transport to links to Central London and Crystal Palace.

Trains from West Norwood and Gipsy Hill go to Victoria, London Bridge and Croydon. Trains from Tulse Hill also go to London Bridge, the City, Wimbledon and Sutton.
